Maxus | Teachers' IB Small Classroom
People might think that being a teacher is an easy task. Enjoy short hours and weekends while just “looking after” children. But is that the case?
Teachers often work overtime and early childhood educators are professional and irreplaceable. What happened during the weekend and what was so important that all teachers worked twelve consecutive days? Check out what were our teachers doing during the weekend!
The professional development of our teachers has always been a central part of our teaching system. We deeply understand that the growth and professionalism of teachers directly affect our teaching quality. Better teachers can deliver our mission and vision to children and families. Hence, our training system is constantly evolving to offer the latest professional knowledge to teachers and aims to become a strong support for our teachers.
From summer training camp to weekly teaching and research, teachers are implementing diverse activities centered around the IB system. This training camp was a great example of cooperation between MKS and IB’s official trainer. New teachers learned the IB curriculum systematically and all employees had a platform to communicate and solve problems so that we were a step further on our path to becoming an excellent IB school.
IB curriculum is a systematic international course from PYP to professional learning. So, in a huge system, what did our teachers learn, and how does the knowledge connect to our daily task? Let me introduce what teachers learned from the KWLS perspective.
IB is a way of inquiry learning with teachers as a guide
IB emphasizes proactive learning and inquiry
IB has six transdisciplinary themes and ten learner profiles
IB is often bilingual
We could see that a lot of teachers knew that IB centered around children, IB’s learning goals and that IB is a proactively bilingual course. So how do we guide children to inquiry in an English immersive environment on daily basis? For example, when we are learning the theme “how do we express ourselves”, we adopted the line of inquiry “story can attract people and convey meaning “so that children can explore the core elements of a story. In this process, children can design their own stories, tell their own stories, and become the leading roles through understanding the characteristics of stories.

How to collect class resources
Teachers walked into the training camp with questions and walked out with resources to bring to their classrooms. They were looking for more resources, accurate evaluation tools, and ways to guide the children. What teachers cared about was what they were experiencing on daily basis. Resourceful activities will be more interesting, and children can enjoy the learning process.

Detailed planning
After the training, many teachers mentioned the importance of detailed strategies and diverse case studies. We enrich our classroom activities through learning from others so that we can generate more ideas and methods to put theories into practice.
